Comments: I was a Sea Scout, SES Vega, McMicken Heights, near Seattle, mid 1960's. We all shared a 63' AVR and cruised Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. our ship was repowered with GMC 671's, very slow and LOUD. But we loved her!

Comments: I was a Sea Explorer Scout aboard the SSS Revenge, a Piedmont, CA boat based out of the Oakland Naal supply Cnter before Port of Oakland converted all that land to wharves.
Some of the names were Bruce Mainprice, John Laingor, Tom or John (don't remember) Burdett. They were the "Officers" in the mid-80's. I was the Bos'n in 1984-85.
The boat had been re-engined with twin GM 8V-71's in the former lazzerette with V-drives located in the former engine room spaces. Boat topped out at about 17kts and we could get it on plane by catching a roller coming into the Golden Gate. Too bad no Hall-Scotts...

Comments: Great job on the webpage!!! I wonder if you know what happened to the Sea Scout ASR 313 in Kearney New Jersey? As a sea scout Skipper years ago, I used to marvel at this beautiful vessel as she cruised the Hudson River. It was skippered by Charles Welte... Keep up the good work!

Comments: Thanks for the nice page on AVR's. Some links have gone stale. I was in Sea Scouts on the Northland on one of those visits to Steamboat Landing on the Sacramento River, circa 1972. Northland like the other boats passed to the Sea Scouts had dual GMC 6-71 diesels substituted for the original gasoline engines. As the Scouts were quite conservative in operation, normal cruise was about 14 knots at that point, not even up on plane.
As you can see Northland was further modified with a larger aft cabin and no open well near the stern, and an enclosed bridge. The Northland organization (or Sea Explorer Ship which referred to the organization, not the hull) received a 73 foot Navy sonar boat in about 1973 and transitioned to that. I believe that the AVR went to another Sea Scout group in a different city.

Comments: I have a avr in dry dock under repair. she is not severly alterd, and i am going to launch her next months after 9 months of hard work. The sea scouts brought her to this area in 1982 from portland oregon. if any one has information on how to research her history it would be useful. thank you, bill M/V EXPLORER

Comments: I was a Naval Cadet aboard 104 Ft. AVR in Alexandia Va. from 1968 till 1973. The vessal had been a Naval Sea Cadet Ship until 1967. The Local Navy League didn't want to foot the bill to maintain the ship and put it off limits. Needless to say after a few months without power it sank along side the pier. One of the former USNSCC officers formed a new organization to hopefuly reserect the vessal. The first time I saw it the main deck was awash. fortunatly someone knew an instructor at the Navy salvage diving school at the Washington Navy Yard and was able to arrange a "training exercise". Myself and about 20 other boy ranging in age from 13 to 17 spent the next year collecting dead fish, removing water loged matterss' hosing out mud, over hauling engines, generators and motors, just to mention a few tasks. By the next summer almost all systems were back in operation and we were underway. The six years I was involved in that program was the best learning experience I've ever had. More than half of the kids in that program went on to naval or maritime profesions

Comments: I was a member of the Compass Rose out of Petaluma and remember all the old AVR's in the Sea Scouts fondly. Great times on summer cruise in the delta. Compass Rose was destroyed by the scouts over political infighting in the early 90's. Napa also had an AVR but was replaced. I wonder whare all those old bay area scout AVR's are now?

You also don't mention the 80 foot ASR' restored in Long Beach and the three other ASR's in Newport Harbor (West)just to mention a few. And don't forget the three Nair DeLong 80 footers used in PT 109.

Comments: Re: AVRs
I was stationed at the Pensacola (Florida) Naval Air Station (Mainside)in 1946. The Navy operated four AVRs. Three had twin Hal Scott engines and the fourth had twin Packard engines. The fourth boat was used exclusively by the Captain of the Base. It's top speed was 59 MPH and it burned 85 gallons of high octane aviation fuel at cruising speed. It's range was 900 miles.
The other three boats were used for rescue missions related to flight training operations.
I was an Engineer on these boats. I lived and slept on one of them during my tour of duty here.
One of the boats had an autographed
8"-10" photograph of Shirley Temple mounted on a bulkhead. The inscription was, "To the boys of the U.S.S.C - 16530, Sincerely, Shirley Temple".

Although she was converted it is basically the same boat as your pictures. Again, thank you because I have been looking for pictures of these boats and your site was the only one I was able to find.

SENT 6 APRIL 2009:
HI Kevin, Congratulations on getting an AVR site going. Nice to see. I'm the fellow in Canada restoring the P-619 to (mostly) original USAAF layout. I've sent a file of a few of the jillions of pics I've got. I'll send a few more in another mail. Brought the boat out of the Delta in '06...see pic on trailer. The I-5 voyage! The boat attracts huge interest everywhere she goes even in her 'not finished' state. When we get her back to 40 knots it should really gather some notice.  Couple of small point on your site. They actually had 4 .50 caliber guns (two per tub) and we're delivered with two Mk 6 depth charges on the aft deck...you can see them on the blueprint on your site. The RPC and Subchaser versions had 3 or 4 racks per side with an extra 16 charges stored in the stern area. The US serving subchaser/patrol versions usually had a 20mm Oelikon gun on the aft deck as well. The crews of a number of boats in the South Pacific put an extra 50 on the bow. Nor only extra fire power but the added weight forward brought the stern out of the water and helped the boats get on the plane a bit easier. Your hull number should be on the centre stern post. Pretty easy top see unless something has been built in front of it. It'll be C-something. I can give you build details if you can retrieve that number. All the best, Randy Cunningham
The following emails were originally posted on the now defunct HOME OF THE AVRs webpage - I found their comments and insights as invaluable historical information on all things AVR .  I hope we can keep this type of dialog going as we swap sea stories and share resources on how to keep these great vessels underway.
